Ryan Malone scored at 2:21 of overtime last night, giving the Tampa Bay Lightning a 2-1 victory in Toronto and spoiling the Maple Leafs debut of Phil Kessel.

Kessel received a loud ovation each time he touched the puck. Acquired by the Maple Leafs in a September trade with the Bruins for two first-round picks and a second-round selection, he had been sidelined while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. The speedy 22-year-old looked strong on the puck and showed no fear going into the corners when he had to.

Phil Kessel set a new career high in shots on net with 10. Looks like not only Savard knows how to get him the puck...

Watch out Phil, you might have a bounty on you, because certain people may not want you to make them look bad for letting you go? I'm just saying.

he should score a ton there, he can play all offense and not have to worry about getting back to play D. go ahead, score 45 goals that way, their team will still lose 6-4 every night

Lucic you sound like a bitter sheep. Blame ownership and management for letting a 40 goal scorer leave town after drafting him #5 overall. Don't dump on Kessel because you still wish he was a Bruin.

no not bitter at all. we could use him, and we're not as good without him. but if someone asked me if i want 2 TOR first round picks and a second, for phil kessel, i'd say yes in a heartbeat. btw, if my statement sounds like a sheep, you sound like a goat

I'd take Kessel...for 3 years and 12 million. What Toronto gave him is ridiculous - we couldn't match that and I'm glad we didn't. Better to save that money for Savard and take what will undoubtedly be a top 5 pick this year another 1st and a 2nd. It's a no brainer.

Well ya not going to have to worry about his 4 or 5 million. He got it and eventually will get more. Teams lined up one after the other to make B's their best offer. He will have a 40 to 50 goal season if he stays healthy and possibly more. Boston isues are far more than PK. They let go of some really decent players - some who gave all every night with character and club-room savy. Ya just don't replace them that easily.
