FOXBORO - Jerod Mayo came out in support of Bill Belichick yesterday regarding the coach’s controversial decision to go for it on fourth-and-2 against the Colts rather than punt.

The Patriots linebacker and defensive captain said he didn’t think Belichick was sending a message to the defense that the coach didn’t have faith in it to stop Peyton Manning & Co.

PREDICTION: Jersey Jets will unveil a new wrinkle this weekend. The trainer will stand around Sexy Rexy with a defibrillator going "CLEAR!" Jets fans will then call Belichick and cheater AND a murderer. Oh my god - he killed Rex Ryan !! Nice. BB might be an evil genius....but he's our evil genius.

Article seems to suggest the defense has reason to be upset. Is it possible Belichick was simply TRYING to win? Without sending messages of any kind? You know, the, "it is what it is" deal. Have not seen that idea explored too much. But, the media probably nailed it with Belichick's inner thoughts of knowingly blowing the call, looking like an idiot and showing the world his arrogance.

You take your best shot to win. The rest of the world can suck socks if they don't get it.

Sending a message? As Bill Parcells once said to a reporter who asked, "Is your decision to not dress him for the game your way of sending him a message?" Parcells: "This isn't FTD, OK? We're not in the business of sending messges, OK? This is football and we are trying to put the players on the fieled who give us the best chance to win this week. Ok?"

Among the more nonsensical analyses of Belichick's strategic option was the interpretation of his choice as a snub to his defense. Good on Mayo for recognizing it. I fear the collective tight-assedness of those who report on the game has prevented them from a basic understanding of why this radical approach is a signal that the same-old-same-old is no longer in vogue in Foxborough. The team itself will be more and more prepared for strategic innovation while their counterparts on other franchises labor in the customary. I dismiss all criticism of tactics as the howling of ignorant masses.

The message was the "unintended consequence" of the decision. If the D hadn't coughed up 2 td's in 4 minutes, rest assured that ball would have been punted.
