The Boston College hockey team is ranked 13th in the country after a 1-1-0 start, and coach Jerry York has been pleased with what he says has been a steady progression by the Eagles.

“It’s early season, and we’ve been together for about a month. I think we’re showing signs of becoming a pretty good hockey team,” York said. “Specifically, our depth in goal is much better than it has been. John (Muse) has come back from the injury much sooner than we thought. So, I feel much better about the depth in the goal and John returning from the hip surgery.”

Muse, a junior from Falmouth, should log the majority of the minutes in net. He played every minute of the 2007-08 season when BC won the NCAA title. Muse will draw support from sophomore Chris Venti of Needham, with freshman Parker Milner biding his time.

Although the Eagles’ roster includes 10 freshmen, York’s eyes have been opened most by a veteran.

“Probably the most pleasant surprise has been Carl Sneep’s play for us,” York said. “He’s a fourth-year player with us and the only upperclass defenseman we can go to. So he’s kind of standard-bearer. He’s had a real good start for us and (has) shown improvement.

“Tommy Cross has come off surgery, and the knee seems very stable and he’s solid, and (fellow sophomore defenseman) Edwin Shea is progressing. Then, every week the freshmen are learning the adjustments. Right now, we’re on track. Every couple of days it’s a steppingstone to try and get a little bit better.”
