BALTIMORE - Even when he was playing for the old Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Julio Lugo thought about how cool it would be to be a member of the Red Sox. He’d stand in the Fenway Park infield, listening to Red Sox stars of the moment being serenaded by the fans, and he wanted in.

Now it would be wrong to view Lugo as an example of how you should be careful what you wish for. After all, he signed a four-year, $36 million contract to play for the Red Sox. So no matter how it all turns out, Lugo is considerably wealthier than he was before he came to Boston.

WHATEVER! No sympathy here. He certainly had his chance(s). The Sox stuck doggedly with him for a year and a half until he got hurt last year, which opened the door for his longterm competition (Lowrie). Then he went on the DL this spring which opened the door for his shortterm competition (Green). When he came back he was immediately handed back his starting job, but he proceeded to literally boot it away. He was a liability and he had cost at least a couple of games this year. So what if now he 'feels' he can play. He's always had a healthy ego, always believed he was more than he is (no doubt enhanced by Theo's man-crush). And lastly, he's making a boatload of dough as a consolation prize. Such a cursed life he has...

Buck spot on,he really is not a crybaby its a long season who knows he may yet get a chance .I always liked his game in Tampa I guess Boston was just to much for him and everything has gone wrong.Maybe throw him at 3rd for a game or two while Mike is out.On a good Boston note tito did not lock him out of the ball park the way many managers would have he uses all his toys in his toy box ,good for tito

I think half of the reason was why Lugo wasn't even worth a ball of baseballs was his psyche. He always seemed to be a guy ready to mentally explode. Other teams notice that he is now mentally keeping himself together thru adversity, saying and doing the correct things, keeping himself ready.
Due to his injuries/declining skills, he is still not worth much of anything on the trade market(not with that salary)but when he is released, seems some one would give him a chance seeing as the Sox are paying his way

I realize it looks like Lugo has lost the starting shortstop job but will the Sox release him with another year and nine million dollars left on his contract? I don't remember them releasing anyone with that much time and cash left on a contract before. I can see him being traded and the Sox paying part of his salary.

While it's easy to pile on Julio. I will admit that he has at least in the public shown himself to a professional throughout his recent benching and when called upon has delivered a couple of big at bats of the bench. Francona's comment "with the bat" is very telling and regardless of how much he makes (Lugo). Teams that are looking for a SS want a guy that can play the position...Given his salary and his diminished range, he's next to impossible to trade and the Sox will have to eat most of his contract and / or take on a contract from another team that has a similar value or greater...9 million is a lot of cash for a .270 hitting utility infielder wtih a questionable glove...

You release him you still have to pay him. You trade him you will still be on the hook because no team will pick up that salary.

Theo really dropped the ball on this guys contract and you cant blame Lugo for being Lugo, he was never any good yet Epstein felt compelled to pay him 36M for 4 years. Now we still need a ss and its not as if Jed Lowrie is the next coming of ...Hanley Ramirez or Alex Gonzales or Orlando Cabrerra..This weak spot has killed us defensively this year.
