Honored for their heroic courage and dedication on the job, 27 police officers were lauded by Gov. Deval Patrick and Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray in the House Chamber of the State House yesterday during the 26th annual George L. Hanna Jr. Awards for Bravery ceremony.

Officers from the Boston, Boston College, Brockton, Revere, Springfield, and Framingham police departments, as well as a Massachusetts State Police trooper, were honored for their work in 11 separate incidents, ranging from rescuing two workers in a manhole stricken by noxious fumes to subduing a gunman who opened fire in a crowded nightclub.

Thank you to all the men and women in blue. These 11 are a short example of the extreme courage that cops have every day they put on that uniform.

Oh almighty god, whose great power and wisdom embraces the universe, Watch over all policeman everywhere. Protect them from harm in the performance of their duty to stop crime,
robbery and violence. We pray, you help them keep our streets and home safe, day and night. We recommend them to your loving care because their duty is dangerous. Give them strength and courage. Protect these brave men. Grant them your almighty protection. Unite them safely with their families after duty has ended.

Quit this pompous hero stuff.

How about if they demote anyone who does not rise to the level of a "hero", they are paid damned well to do an infrequently dangerous job so live with it and expect an occasional tough situation where you have to step up to do what you signed up to do.

Jerk. Infrequently dangerous job? You probably couldn't handle it for even one day.

What no parade? Fireworks? Jets in a fly over formation? The biggest heros in life go unnoticed, they prefer it that way, they aspire to act in the face of peril, not to be deemed a "hero" in the face of a camera. Since when is doing what you are overpaid to do heroic? Doctors, nurses, EMTs, save lives daily, yet they don't prance around in "hero costumes"! Nothing but self-serving, puffery designed to justify what Massachusetts has become...a police state.
