Law would mandate close tabs on ex-cons

Convicts like serial batterer Gary Gomes would undergo mandatory supervision once their jail time ends under a proposal that the Patrick administration wants to bring back to life after this week’s New Bedford bloodbath.

“It’s a good public safety tool to help reduce recidivism,” said Mary Elizabeth Heffernan, undersecretary of criminal justice at the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security. “Research shows that ex-offenders that are under some sort of supervision on release are less likely to commit another crime.”
