Challenger Michael Flaherty chases Mayor Thomas M. Menino to the big finish today with fence-sitting voters poised to hand the popular incumbent a decisive mandate or his spirited rival a historic political upset.

“The undecided (block of voters) leans against incumbency. The question is whether they get out to vote,” said Larry DiCara, a former mayoral candidate and City Council president.

Thomas Menino and his dirty machine are simply an unrelenting plague that has metastasized itself in every corner of this city.

Winning or losing this election will never alter that harsh reality.

God help us.

4 more years sounds good to me! The fact that Flats keeps saying he is down by single digits, means he knows he will lose.

Mandates, Mr. Menino? You have had mandates for 16 years, Mr. Menino, and you have failed at every single one. Every single city department has more employees now than when you were first elected. Can you name one city department that has been eliminated or reduced in staff due to their incompetence, like the BRA, which is nothing more than a front for "Campaign re-election fund" shaking down developers for contributions or their projects are pigeon holed. Schools? 2.5 times the budget as in 1992. Plenty of computers, I see, but did it ever occur to youthat children should be taught how to read and write FIRST before they ever see a computer insterad of having access to one in the 3rd grade? Class sizes are smaller, a primary UNION objective, but are you aware that Boston area High school graduates are among the lowest in the United States in English and mathematics comprehension? You obviously forgot the old axiom of "The more police, the more crime." Sure enough, expenditures for BPD have gone up every single year and guess what, so has crime and so has the number of police brutality cases. There is nothing more dangerous than ANY government entity with not enough to do and a police agency with that problem--and their limitless budget--is the most dangerous of them all.
What are you proud of, Mr. Menino? Your wasteline? That's about 10" bigger since you took office? That you have the highest city taxes that "the tourists will pay" in the world? In case you forgot, tourism is off 22% since you took office as Boston is now considered THE most expensive city to visit in the United States and 4th in the world, all due to the higher taxes you don't want the locals to pay.
Don't get me wrong, sir. I am not going to vote for Mr. Flaherty, either. As a matter of fact, I won't vote for anyone today. But I am certain there will be plenty of people who can barely speak English voting for you, due to name recognition, for a mayor that can't speak English at all. What a disgrace.

The Mayor should win because he is th ebest candidate. Flaherty has run a campaign of negativity and hatred. Hate rots the vessel that carries it and Flats is by now quite rotten. He has surrounded himself with firefighters who are corrupt buffoons that cant push themselves away from the feed trough. A vote for Flats is a vote for corruption.

I am a firefighter for Menino. The moron we have as union prez and his idiotic overstuffed sidekick have destroyed the reputation of the firefighters just because they don't want us to pee for a drug test?

I have been surprised with the lack of ideas on th epart of Flaherty and also by his reluctance to take a stand against the abuses in the fire union. When your largest supporters are the most corrupt people in the state, what does that say about you? I think the people are smart enough to reelect Menino. He is a good man.
