Once in a while, Mike McElhinney confides, “I’ll dream about those streets, those kids, then wake up feeling like the loneliest guy in the world, wishing I was back there.”

Tonight he’ll get that chance when that old crowd from the Roxbury prairie gathers at the Sons of Italy in Quincy for a rekindling of friendships that stretch back more than 50 years.

Howard, you're looking a little pudgy in that picture. A few too many sausages during your trip to Italy perhaps? Maybe you should try throwing up on television.

What a difference. Same place, different cultures.

Both dirt poor. Their's even more so since there was less of a welfare state then.

One culture was about family, church, doing the right thing, hard work, clean homes and yards, and self respect.

The other culture. The one that lives in those same homes now is about stealing, shooting, gangs, drugs, no fathers, rap music, hand outs, excuses.

One culture that had May processions and Easter parades.

The other culture a Caribbean Festival that promotes fat women in clothes too small for a child writhing like animals in the streets simulating sex acts. Public drug smoking and family violence.

Mothers with their overweight kids hanging out all hours of the day and night with a Macdonald's bag in their hand and a gun tucked into their waist.

Those are the same guys that chased, humiliated and beat anyone that wasn\'t Irish and Roman Catholic. Ah, the good old days...they\'re the same guys that taught their kids to throw rocks at buses with little kids riding to schools 35 years ago...

My grandparents grew up in Roxbury. They tell story's of it being a very different place. Not every home was an apartment and they said everyone from the area went to school together and knew each other. They said people had pride in the homes they owned and kept it clean. No Trash on the side of the road. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED !!!!!!! Now its hookers, trash, drugs, thugs and murder. Its all the rental properties. There are a lot of great people that live there still, but they have it ruined by a few animals that have no respect for others.

A big difference is back then they didn't have the government handouts and people actually strived to improve their lives. Today the lazy bums wait for the monthly kiss in the mail and have zero incentive to get off their butt because our tax dollars are paying for their section 8, welfare, and food stamps. That leves them enough money to buy their big screen tv, expensive clothes, and jewlery. The priorities are so out of whack.
