Pop music fans don’t care about guitar anymore. If it was ’77, Mayer could make a record like Eric Clapton’s “Slowhand,” but today pop fans prefer slick, whisper-thin production and wussy instrumentation. So this would-be guitar hero delivers his next boring No. 1 - which no one will remember in 2020. The funkiest song is Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads” and even this 80-year-old classic is too slick. But as bland as “Battle Studies” is, with a Taylor Swift guest spot (“Half of My Heart”) it will connect with the aimed-at demographic.
