TRAIN

Train has always been able to push the right pop-rock buttons - “Calling All Angels” and “Drops of Jupiter” are perfect radio singles. And at the start of this, their fifth album, it appears they’ve done their best work yet. The opening title cut is a rollicking rocker with a catchy chorus. “Hey, Soul Sister” starts with a ukelele solo and evolves into an uptempo Jack Johnson/Israel Kamakawiwo’ole-like treat, while the reggaeish “I Got You,” borrows the Doobie Brothers’ “Old black water, keep on rollin’ ” refrain. Sadly, the rest of the album goes off the rails with paint-by-numbers pop. Download: “Hey, Soul Sister.”
