Those accustomed to the pure combustion of West Africa’s mbalax (think Youssou N’Dour) will be struck by the ease and grace of the lesser-known fula style championed by Balde. Written to showcase lyrics of praise and instruction typical of traditional Senegalese music, Balde’s music is anything but retrograde, taking in elements of other homegrown styles and leavening the mix with Western instruments such as violin, saxophone, flute and accordion. At once familiar and fresh, “Le Marigot Club Dakar” is a warm, gentle breeze out of Africa. Download: “Sora.”
