“In Love & War” (Feenix Rising/Def Jam): B-

In a genre in which the Rihannas and Beyonces of the world already reign supreme, Amerie seems caught in a sonic identity crisis; the first four songs of her fourth album are an odd run of go-go and old-school rock-soul tracks that frequently overtax her limited vocals. She finally hits her stride doing ambient, hip-hop-infused r & b, but it doesn’t help that monotonous lyrics about rocky or recently ended relationships dominate the album. Download: “Why R U.”
