World Painted Blood (American/Sony): A

Few bands in any genre carry such a notorious reputation for controversy - or such expectations - as Slayer. From the opening notes of the earth-scorching title track to the final squeals of the religion-tinged “Not of This God,” Tom Araya, Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman and Dave Lombardo more than meet the chaotic standard they set for themselves long ago. Helping the cause is the triumphant return of producer Rick Rubin, who helped the band find its signature sonic slam on the 1986 classic “Reign in Blood.” Slayer may be nearing the end of its career, but on this clenched-fist speed metal assault they step up their game a notch, enough to inspire a new generation to consider carving “Slayer” into their arms.
