“Phrazes for the Young” (RCA): B

This is the Stones doing disco. Which is to say not bad (who doesn’t love “Miss You?”) for a formerly very hip artist chasing what’s hip now. On his eight-cut solo debut, the Strokes singer slips his faded “I heart NY” T-shirt over electro pop. It’s mostly a cute fit. With a little massaging, “11th Dimension” could be a Lady Gaga hit; “Tourist” drifts nicely between a West African groove and a synth symphony. But ’ brittle, flat voice makes his stab at Radiohead noise (“River of Brakelights”) painful. Download “Ludlow St.,” his “Honky Tonk Women,” is electro pop with twang.
