“Say Anything” (RCA): B+

Max Bemis has a knack for writing cheeky, clever, self-lacerating songs chock-full of pop culture references. He grows up a bit on the California emo-punk band’s latest (in stores Tuesday); the dude who deals daily with bipolar disorder bares his soul. “Crush’d” is an up-tempo ode of unrequited love for a girl who is “like Bjork but with better fashion sense.” “Property” is a gloriously theatrical ’50s-style stroll. Best of all is Clash-like single “Hate Everyone,” the tune to download, with its cathartic sing-along chorus: “I hate everyone on this cursed Earth.” (Appearing tonight at the House of Blues.)
