Three factors will make Michael Jackson 2009’s best-selling artist: his death, his genius and his record label’s talent for re-packaging and re-selling his hits to fans who have bought them two, three, maybe four times already.

“This Is It” isn’t a soundtrack from the soon-to-open movie, which was cobbled together from rehearsal footage. Instead, it’s billed as “The Music That Inspired the Movie.” Disc one includes 16 songs, 14 of them solo hits every Jackson fan already owns - “Beat It,” “Thriller,” “Billie Jean,” etc. The last two tracks are versions of “This Is It,” the “new” Michael single, which was actually co-written by Paul Anka, roughly recorded in ’83 and subsequently shelved (although Latin/r&b singer Sa-Fire released the song under its original title, “I Never Heard,” in 1991). The first take of the sappy, hooky ballad sounds like a dressed-up demo, which it is; the second adds an orchestra, making it even more of a feel-good, “Free Willy”-style MJ anthem.
