Girl/guy pop teams have a long, often campy history: Lionel Richie & Diana Ross’ “Endless Love,” Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton’s “Islands in the Stream,” Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond’s “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers.” But lately they’ve become more cool than camp.

A handful of rock stars (and film stars) have paired up to croon artfully. But with so many underground rockers and A-list actresses teaming up, it’s hard to tell just who’s doing what with whom and for how long. Let us help.

The Swell Season

The duo: Irish rocker Glen Hansard and Czech unknown Marketa Irglova, who hit it big with the sleeper hit film “Once” in ’07 (and even won an Academy Award for the song “Falling Slowly”).

The sound: Kind of depressing with slivers of bright hope, the two mostly frame their melancholy voices with Hansard’s acoustic guitar and Irglova’s piano.

The future: Even after breaking up as a couple, the two soldier on with new album “Strict Joy” and a show at Berklee Performance Center on Friday.

Liam Finn & Eliza-Jane Barnes

The duo: Finn is the son of Crowded House’s Neil Finn and talented-if-strange singer-songwriter Eliza-Jane Barnes, daughter of Australian rocker Jimmy Barnes, is his childhood pal.

The sound: Their debut, “Champagne in Seashells,” has some Beatles twists and electronica flashes, but it’s mostly catchy rock ’n’ roll with their twin vocals on top of each other.

The future: The pair have been touring for months and digging it; comedic banter, cowbells, frivolity abound. They play the Middle East tonight.

She & Him

The duo: Quirky film star Zooey Deschanel and less-quirky-but-still-quirky indie star M. Ward.

The sound: Last year’s debut,“Volume One,” was (yes) quirky pop/Americana with a lounge vibe. Odd, but good because of Zooey’s flat, distinctive voice.

The future: M. Ward is currently on tour with the Monsters of Folk, but he told the Herald last week that his first priority for 2010 is a new She & Him disc.

Wye Oak

The duo: Neither Andy Stack nor Jenn Wasner has a movie career or famous dad. They’re just a couple from Baltimore.
