It’s a wrap: Angels top Sox 5-0

Friday, October 9th, 2009

John Lackey’s 7 1/3 shutout innings led the Angels to their 5-0 victory over the Red Sox tonight in the Division Series. We’ll have plenty of postgame analysis and commentary, so stay tuned…

A sloppy game with some great plays….and Lackey is done

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Weird. For all the bad plays made in this game so far, there have also been some truly great ones. This just in: Kotchman, batting for Alex Gonzalez, hit a screaming line drive to third baseman Chone Figgins, who scooped up the ball and made the throw to first. In an upset, CB Bucknor got the call right.

Lackey is done now. He received a thunderous ovation from the Angel Stadium masses as he walked to the dugout. Now pitching is lefty Darren Oliver, and let’s just ask: When the Red Sox released this guy in July of 2002, didn’t you think he was, you know, done? He was awful, just awful. But sometimes players re-invent themselves, and that has been the case with Oliver. Heck, he was 7-1 with a 2.88 ERA in 54 relief appearances for the Dodgers last year; this year, in 63 relief appearances with the Angels, he was 5-1 with a 2.71 ERA. The man has done just fine since leaving the Red Sox.

He retired the two batters he faced in the top of the eighth, and the Angels are coming up with a 5-0 lead to face Dan Bard, about to make his first career postseason appearance.

Seen this one lately?

With the bases loaded, nobody out, Juan Rivera hit a hard grounder to third baseman Mike Lowell, who threw home for the force. Catcher Victor Martinez then threw back to Lowell, who made the tag at third for a 5-2-5 double play. Anyone out there seen a 5-2-5 double play?

The mighty mo did not swing in Boston’s direction, however. Kendry Morales dumped an RBI single to left field, and Jason Bay threw the ball away, allowing a second runner to score.

We’re into the top of the eighth now, and J.D. Drew has just led off with a single to right. Casey Kotchman, a former Angel, is batting for Alex Gonzalez. And Drew has just moved up on a wild pitch. So maybe we have something going here.

It’s falling apart for the Red Sox

Friday, October 9th, 2009

This game is turning in a mess. Ramon Ramirez walked Bobby Abreu, hit Torii Hunter (angry jeers from Angels fans) and then had a grounder by Vlad Guerrero go off his body to load the bases with nobody out.

Takashi Saito is now pitching.

Ramirez takes the hill for Sox

Jon Lester’s night is finis. He pitched six innings, the major blight on his record being the three-run homer by Torii Hunter in the fifth.

Ramon Ramirez is now pitching.
