Maroney: ”I have my issues.”
Posted by Karen Guregian at 3:45 pm

Lawrence Maroney conducted an interview with the media prior to heading out to practice at San Jose State that left more questions than answers. At one point, he was asked why he wasn’t able to surge forward to get a key first down during the 49ers game.

”Hey, I have my issues. There are reasons,” Maroney said. ”I’d rather not speak about them. But there are reasons.”

He left those “reasons” open to interpretation. He didn’t acknowledge it being a shoulder problem, which caused him to miss the second game of the season, a lack of confidence, or perhaps, a personal issue that’s weighing on him. He did say, however, it was a “new” issue.

”Even if you hit it on the head, I’m going to tell you ‘no,”’ he said, when asked if the shoulder was the problem.

Maroney agree he left yards out on the field last Sunday.

”Most definitely. Like I said, I have issues right now,” Maroney said. ”I’m trying to work through them the best I can, and trying to do the best I can with my problem.”

NFL warns Raiders about tampering allegation
Posted by Karen Guregian at 12:54 pm

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen,  owner Al Davis has received a letter from the NFL informing him that the Raiders are subject to discipline for publicly accusing the Patriots of tampering with Randy Moss.

Mortensen suggested the Raiders risked losing anywhere from $250K in fines to multiple draft picks.

Last week, following his press conference to fire coach Lane Kiffin, Davis claimed the Pats violated NFL rules by trying out Moss before acquiring him from Oakland.

Pats coach Bill Belichick has stated for the record there was no such tryout.

Injury news: Jordan has calf problem
Posted by Karen Guregian at 8:43 pm

According to the practice participation report released by the Pats, LaMont Jordan is suffering from a calf injury.

The running back had left the 49ers game, going down in a heap, his right leg buckling, without really being hit.

Also on the report for the Pats were wide receiver Kelley Washington (ankle), and linebacker Eric Alexander (hamstring).

Cornerback Lewis Sanders, who returned to practice after missing all of last week with a hamstring problem, was listed as being limited in participation.

Also of note, running back Laurence Maroney (shoulder) was on the report, but had full participation in practice.

On the Chargers side, running back LaDainian Tomlinson missed the entire practice with a toe injury, as did wide receiver Chris Chambers (ankle) and linebacker Jyles Tucker (hamstring).

Practice fodder from San Jose State
Posted by Karen Guregian at 5:00 pm

The Patriots were in  full pads for their initial practice at San Jose State. The practice field at Spartan Stadium wasn’t in the best shape, with patchy and uneven stretches of grass, but the club felt the benefits of remaining out on the West Coast would work in their favor.

Missing from the media viewing portion of practice were running back LaMont Jordan, who left Sunday’s game with a leg injury, wide receiver Kelley Washington, who has missed the past few games with an ankle injury, and linebacker Eric Alexander, who has been hampered by a hamstring problem.

Cornerback Lewis Sanders, who had missed the last game with a hamstring issue, was back on the field.

Wearing black jerseys connoting practice players of the week were linebacker Shawn Crable, quarterback Matt Gutierrez, and practice squad running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

Belichick talks Merriman
Posted by Karen Guregian at 6:06 pm

Patriots coach Bill Belichick has moved on from Sunday’s win over the 49ers, and is looking squarely at San Diego. During his conference call with reporters earlier today, a few answers stood out, most notably one about Shawne Merriman.

When asked about the impact of the Chargers losing their stud pass rusher Merriman for the season, Belichick made it sound like it hasn’t been much of a factor.

”He’s a terrific player, but I think they have gotten good production out of both kids that have played over there the last couple of weeks,” he said. ” They still have a very good pass rush all the way across the board. They like to bring those outside linebackers a lot and I would say if anything, they have been bringing them just as much if not more than when he was there . . . . I’m not saying he’s not a loss, but they still get pretty good production out of those outside linebackers and overall pass rush.”

In terms of Patriot rookies Jonathan Wilhite and Terrence Wheatley, Belichick was asked why Wilhite saw more action than second-round pick Wheatley in Sunday’s game. The answer had to do with Wilhite having more reps in practice on the inside playing in the particular sub package being used.

Terrence and Jonathan both gave us some good quality snaps against San Francisco,” Belichick said, ”and hopefully they can build on that and keep improving, and if they do that, maybe there is a chance for them to find more of a role defensively for us.”

Belichick won’t knock Maroney
Posted by Karen Guregian at 6:59 pm

Perhaps the most interesting item out of Bill Belichick’s conference call a bit earlier today dealt with an answer he gave when asked if he was getting everything he felt he should be getting in terms of production from Laurence Maroney at this stage of his career.

”Yeah, I think Laurence has done a good job for us,” Belichick said. ”I think he’s a good back. He’s played well, and I think he’ll continue to play well for us.”

Maroney, of course, is in his third season, has been injury prone, and after turning it on late last season with a series of 100-yard games, has gotten off to an incredibly slow start. After missing the Miami game two weeks ago with a shoulder injury, Maroney finished with just 26 yads on 10 carries against the 49ers. There was one play where he ran out of bounds, one yard short of the first down marker, where it appeared he could have gotten the first down.

Ups and downs from a solid win
Posted by John Tomase at 9:38 pm

UP

Randy Moss: The all-world wideout finally broke through with 5 catches for 111 yards and a 66-yard touchdown. His presence stretched the field and opened up everything else the Pats did.

Kevin Faulk: Mr. Do Everything once again did . . . everything. He rushed for two touchdowns — his first trips to the end zone since beating the Colts last November — was a threat on punt returns, and was his typical twisting self on passes underneath.

Matt Cassel: OK, so he was sacked five times. And he threw a pair of interceptions. But Cassel still completed 22 of 32 for 259 yards, all career highs, and the 66-yarder to Moss was a thing of beauty. He also spearheaded a 12-play, 80-yard drive in the final three minutes of the first half.

Rodney Harrison: Harrison picked one pass, tipped another that was intercepted, and was his typically feisty self. He also made an outstanding open-field tackle to stop the 49ers short of a first down.

DOWN

Laurence Maroney: Is a running back controversy brewing? Maroney was tentative and indecisive AGAIN, while Sammy Morris ran with authority. Running behind the same blockers, Maroney gained 26 yards on 10 carries, while Morris went for 63 yards on 16 carries.

Pass protection: This one may require a trip to the videotape, because anecdotally it seemed like Cassel’s indecision played a role, but five sacks are five sacks.

Chris Hanson: The Patriots punter netted only 27.3 yards on his four punts and repeatedly blew opportunities to pin the 49ers.

Halftime analysis: Getting their groove on
Posted by John Tomase at 5:51 pm

The rust seems to be coming off.

Anyone hoping for a blowout has been disappointed, but the Pats appear to be exerting their will on the 49ers.

They lead 17-14 at the half with their most sustained offense of the young season.

The Pats started slowly and things had a here-we-go-again feel for a little more than a quarter, with San Francisco leading 14-7 and moving the ball far better than the Pats.

But the Patriots settled down behind a power running game to score the final 10 points of the half, finishing with a 12-play, 80-yard drive that consumed just 2:58 of clock and ended with Kevin Faulk’s two-yard touchdown run.

The game has marked the return of Randy Moss as a big-play threat. Though two of three times the Pats looked for Moss downfield ended in interceptions, the other attempt resulted in a 66-yard touchdown reception. He has 104 yards on four receptions.

Defensively, the gap between the linebackers and secondary has once again been soft, with a pair of 49ers drops helping their cause. Some conservative playcalling by San Francisco didn’t hurt either, particularly three straight runs on the 49ers’ final full drive of the half.

Offensively, the Pats began to find a rhythm in the second quarter, mixing power runs by Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk with short passes to control the time of possession battle. The Pats are exploiting the middle of San Francisco’s defense with interior running plays.

The 49ers are honoring Hall of Famer Steve Young as we speak. It’s starting to feel like this is going to be San Fran’s last highlight of the afternoon.

Moss burns top two
Posted by John Tomase at 4:42 pm

Interesting note on Randy Moss’s 66-yard touchdown reception from Matt Cassel. Not only was it the Pats’ first long completion to Moss since Cassel became quarterback, it also showcased how devastating a weapon Moss is, because the players San Francisco had in coverage were their top two corners — Nate Clements and Walt Harris. Moss split the two, with Harris stumbling, though it hardly mattered.

Aside from the usual suspects - Kelley Washington (ankle), Lewis Sanders (hamstring) and Eric Alexander (hamstring) - missing practice, one new name surfaced, and it should bear watching. Wide receiver Wes Welker was limited in participation today due to a groin injury. It should be noted Welker missed some of mini-camp and the early part of training camp with a groin problem.

Moss mum on Davis
Posted by Karen Guregian at 1:20 pm

Randy Moss, who spoke at his locker today, was asked if he had any reaction to charges made by Raiders owner Al Davis that the Patriots had tampered, prior to acquiring him in a trade.

”No, not at all,” Moss answered.

Pat’s coach Bill Belichick, meanwhile, avoided the question earlier during his press conference, saying the focus was on the 49ers.

Moss did comment on his growing on-field relationship with quarterback Matt Cassel.

I think first of all he has to believe in himself and I think that will  trickle on down to the whole offense. We’ve seen Matt progress the last couple of weeks quicker than we expected him to,” Moss said. ”We just have to put guys around him and let him be the quarterback. He gets the good and the bad. With
the 10 guys we put around him, we have to make it happen.so not everything is on him and his shoulders. He has to be smart and distribute the ball but at the same he has 11 guys out there that have to get the job done. We like what we are doing as a whole offense unit and hopefully we can
keep going.”

Wilfork wants to end career as a Patriot
Posted by Karen Guregian at 12:23 pm

In the lockerroom a short while ago, Vince Wilfork voiced his desire to emulate Troy Brown, and retire a lifelong Patriot. The nose tackle, who has two years remaining on his current pact, would love to make his stay in New England a permanent one.”I’m going to do everything in my will power to stay. I’m pretty sure, they’re going to do the same thing,” Wilfork said. ”I love my teammates. I love this organization. I love my coaches. It’s very rare when you have somebody that really loves his company in the lockerroom, where you can sit back and laugh, and just have fun and play football. It’s rare.”

Wilfork claimed there had been no discussions or progress on a new deal or extension.

”I got two more years. That’s something I’m not even worried about right now. That’ll take care of itself,” he said. ”I’m a football player. I signed up for six years. That’s what I’m looking to play. If anything happens between now and then, it happens. But I’m looking to play all my six. But I’m happy. I can’t get any happier than I am.

”I want to end my career here. I want to end my football career to end in New England. If they don’t know, I’m pretty sure you guys will let them know how much I love it here. i don’t want to go anywhere else. When I signed here, the first thing I said in my press conference, ‘I want to start a Patriot, and I want to end a Patriot. ‘

”I’m far from not being finished. I got a couple more years before I call it quits,” he went on. ”I love it here, man. You can’t find anybody else that can come in and work, and like their company. Everyone you meet here is unbelievable. I don’t have any complaints. None. I can’t complain about anything. I’m happy. I’m always smiling. I love to do what I do. Playing football, and having fun with the guys I do battle with every Sunday. That’s what I look forward to.”

Wilfork voiced his admiration for Brown, who retired after 15 seasons in one uniform - as a Patriot.

”I hope I can put in as many as he did,” Wilfork said of Brown. ”He had a lot of respect for these guys in this lockerrroom, upstairs and everywhere. I have the same respect (for him). Learn from the best. When you have guys like that, showing you the way, leading the way of how to be person, how to be a teammate, how to be a leader . . . he left his mark in this lockerroom. He left his mark on me. He’s a good guy to idolize.”
